Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, is caused by overactive sweat glands that produce more sweat than necessary to regulate body temperature. This condition can be caused by genetics, medical conditions, medications, or emotional triggers.
This procedure is also known as hyperhidrosis treatment. When severe sweating gets in the way of daily activities and antiperspirants are not working, you may be a suitable candidate for the Botulinum toxin treatment. The body areas that can be effected include: the underarms, palms, feet and forehead.
Botulinum toxin is injected into the affected areas to help control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands do not receive chemical signals, the severe sweating settles.
Botulinum toxin is approved by the FDA to treat the symptoms of severe underarm sweating when topical medicines do not work well enough. It is quick, painless, extremely effective and can last between 6-8 months.
The botox injection procedure is generally not painful, as a topical anesthetic cream can be applied to the area prior to the injection to minimize discomfort.
During the botox injection treatment, the practitioner will inject small amounts of botox into the affected areas using a small needle. You may experience some minor discomfort or pressure during the injection. After the treatment, you may experience some swelling or redness at the injection site, which typically resolves within a few days.
As with any medical treatment, there are potential risks and side effects of botox injections for excessive sweating. The most common side effects include pain or discomfort at the injection site, temporary muscle weakness, and dry mouth.
After Botox treatment for excessive sweating, patients can typically expect to see the results within 2-4 days, with the full effect taking up to 2 weeks. The duration of the results can vary from person to person, but typically last between 5-6 months. It's important to note that the efficacy of the treatment may decrease over time with subsequent treatments, but can be maintained with regular touch-ups as recommended by your doctor.
It's important to have a consultation with with a physician prior the treatment. They will take into consideration your medical history, current medications, and overall health status to determine if Botox is safe and appropriate for you.
